What if a single Flood Modeller simulation could test 44 target outflow scenarios and help identify the most effective response?
Discover how Ben Gibson, Technical Director at JBA Consulting, used Flood Modeller to develop an innovative forecasting model for the Leigh Flood Storage Area in Kent. This key piece of infrastructure is operated and maintained by the Environment Agency, and plays an important role in managing flood risk from the River Medway for communities in Tonbridge and Hildenborough.
To support more efficient operational decision-making, the project combined 44 target outflow scenarios within a single simulation. This creative approach made it possible to test and compare a wide range of potential responses without running each scenario separately.
Faced with a complex forecasting challenge, the team pushed beyond conventional modelling approaches, using a combination of sub-models, logical rules, and radial gate units to automate scenario testing and compare outcomes. The project also integrated 3D modelling techniques to better understand gate behaviour and identify opportunities to refine the underlying 1D model.
Find out how creative use of existing Flood Modeller functionality can improve modelling efficiency, provide clearer operational insight and help teams approach complex flood forecasting challenges in new ways.
