Overview

Whether you’re completely new to modeling or looking to formalize your existing knowledge, this course blends expert guidance, real-world context, and hands-on experience to bring the subject to life. Rather than focusing on theory alone, you’ll actively work with real datasets, build models step-by-step in Flood Modeller, and see how flood modeling supports practical engineering and environmental decisions.

Across the three days, you’ll be guided through the full modeling workflow - from understanding the purpose of flood models and the data that underpins them, to building your own simulations and exploring their outputs. With a strong emphasis on learning by doing, you’ll gain practical, transferable skills that mirror real project work.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you’ll leave with not just theoretical knowledge, but the practical confidence to start developing your models with Flood Modeller. You’ll understand how models are built, how they are used in real-world projects, and how to interpret their results in a meaningful way - providing a strong platform for progressing to more advanced modeling techniques.

What you will learn

  • Build a solid understanding of flood modeling principles and real-world applications

  • Learn how to develop, run, and interpret both 1D and 2D models

  • Understand how model schematization represents rivers, floodplains, and structures

  • Gain confidence in reviewing model outputs and relating them to engineering decisions

  • Appreciate how different modeling approaches are used together in practice

Hands-on practical experience

A key feature of this course is the extensive use of guided practical exercises, allowing you to apply what you learn in realistic scenarios. You will:

Build a 1D river model from survey data

Work with cross-section data and boundary conditions to create and run both steady and unsteady simulations.

Refine and improve a model

Adjust roughness, introduce floodplain features, and understand how model representation affects results.

Enhance your model with hydraulic structures

Add features such as bridges and explore how they influence flow behavior.

Develop a 2D model from scratch

Set up inflows, define active areas, run simulations, and visually review flood extents and depths.

Create a simple linked 1D–2D model

Connect a river model to a floodplain to understand how combined approaches are used in practice.

Modify and compare model scenarios

Introduce elements such as buildings or roughness changes and see their impact on results.
