The 1D flood calculator tool provides an easy method for quickly converting your 1D model outputs into a variety of standard GIS formats, enabling the impacts from your modelled data to be visualised and interpreted on a map.

A 1D flood model will calculate water level data at each node location within the model network. This data can be associated to a triangular network, or TIN, to create a water surface. Intersecting this with a grid of ground elevation data will yield the flood extent. The 1D flood calculator tool can be used to perform this intersection, producing flood maps from your model data in a variety of useful formats.

If the flood calculator is used to output data to a polygon shapefile format, it will represent the outline of the flood extent from your model. This format can also be converted to KML format for viewing within Google Earth (either as a direct output from the 1D flood calculator or by converting the shapefile format using the Export to Google Earth function).

If the tool is used to create new depth grids, applying an appropriate colour ramp to the data will produce an interpretation of the depth variations across the flooded area. Additionally, the tool includes an option to “stitch” together depth grids calculated from multiple timesteps of your results to create a 2D animation from your 1D results (in 2dm/dat format).

How to use the 1D flood calculator

The 1D flood calculator tool is accessed from the Results tab of the main toolbar. The tool displays in a new window and presents the available grid files (to represent ground elevations) and TIN files (together with loaded time series data) within the current project.

You have the option to select a single combination of these, e.g. the maximum extents data, and then click the Run button to proceed with the calculation. Alternatively, select multiple timesteps using the Add button to build up a batch of flood map calculations.

The flood calculator performs the subtraction of ground levels from the water surface. You can specify the resultant flood extent to be output into any of the following formats:

  • Flood depth grid (ASCII or binary flt)

  • Flood extent outline (polygon shapefile)

  • Google Earth flood extent (kml file)

  • Animated sequence (2dm/dat file structure)
