In addition to Flood Modeller Pro’s integrated 1D and 2D solvers, CH2M’s industry-leading flood modelling software seamlessly links to BMT WBM’s 2D TUFLOW software enabling an alternative integrated 1D-2D approach to modelling, combining open-channel, closed pipe and overland flow.

In order to link the two models together, a user needs access to Flood Modeller Pro, including the TUFLOW Link, and TUFLOW (unless Flood Modeller Free and the TUFLOW tutorial model are being used which provides up to 10 links at no cost as part of Flood Modeller Free version 4.2).

In order to configure the TUFLOW link, the user will need to edit their computers settings and/or selected files. The following guidance notes explain the steps to take when linking Flood Modeller Pro with TUFLOW.

Step 1: Installation of the software

Prior to setting up the TUFLOW link, Flood Modeller Pro and TUFLOW need to be installed on a computer. The full versions of these software will only work if the user has a USB dongle or if their computer is connected to their organisations network license (although note that limited linking is also possible with Flood Modeller Free, which does not require a license).

When installing the software, you will have the option to download a 32-bit and 64-bit build, depending on the specification of your computer. Please ensure that the same type of build (32-bit or 64-bit) is downloaded for both Flood Modeller Pro and TUFLOW, otherwise the software cannot be linked.

Note: When installing TUFLOW, the downloaded file needs to be unzipped into a folder on the C drive e.g. C:\TUFLOW, so that the TUFLOW executable (e.g. TUFLOW_iSP_w64.exe) is located here: C:\TUFLOW\w64.

Step 2: Linking Flood Modeller Pro with TUFLOW

In order to link the software, Flood Modeller Pro needs to be able to 'see' the TUFLOW engine files.

Option 1

Users should add the location of the TUFLOW files (e.g. C:\TUFLOW\w64) to the [Preferences] section of the settings file formsed.ini (located here: [AppData]/Roaming/Flood Modeller).

There are three options available for this:

  1. TUFLOWPATH=… (this contains an explicit path to the 32 or 64-bit TUFLOW installation)
  2. TUFLOWPATH32=… (this can only contain the path to the relevant 32-bit installation)
  3. TUFLOWPATH64=… (this can only contain the path to the relevant 64-bit installation)

Note: [AppData] is usually located in the C:\Users\<Username> folder. It is usually hidden, therefore you may need to change a setting in your operating system to show hidden folders

Option 2

Users should add the location of the TUFLOW folder (e.g. C:\TUFLOW\w64) to the system path, by adding this path name to the user's PATH environment variable.

The path to the TUFLOW files can be added to the user or system variables section. However, only one path to a folder containing TUFLOW executables should be contained in the user and system variables section of the Environment Variables window. Therefore, take care to check for PATH variables in both sections. When a new path is added to the path variable it should be separated from the previous path using a “;”.

Once option 1 or 2 has been completed, Flood Modeller Pro needs to be closed (if it was open during the editing) and re-opened in order for the changes to be applied.
