Do you have a non-georeferenced 1D network (.dat) file but would like to geo-reference your model? If you have access to a nodes shapefile / MapInfo file from linking with TUFLOW, then we have a solution for you…

  1. Load the 1D Network (.dat) file into Flood Modeller (Home > Networks > Load 1D Network)

  2. Add the .dat file into the Layers Panel (you can simply drag this from the Project Panel onto the map, or use Home > GIS Data > Add GIS Data and select the .dat file again)

  3. Add the nodes file into the Layers panel (Home > GIS Data > Add GIS Data …). Note, if this is in MapInfo format it will be converted to a shapefile (named *_Point.shp). This should be a shapefile containing a single attribute field, populated by the list of node labels:

  4. You may have to change the attribute header for Flood Modeller to recognise it (it needs to be “node_lbl”). To do this:

    (A) Right-click on the nodes file in the Layers panel and choose Start Edit. The Layer Editor toolbar tab will be displayed as shown below:

    (B) Save as a new file, choose Layer Editor > Save As…

    (C) Click Layer Editor > Attribute Window to display the attributes of the shapefile

    (D) Select the Edit attribute table fields icon in the attribute window

    (E) Edit the appropriate field name and replace with “node_lbl”

    (F) Save the new nodes file (Layer Editor > Save, and then Stop)

  5. Select the .dat file in the Layers Panel (not from the Project Panel) so that it is highlighted

  6. Select Toolbox > Additional Model Build Tools > 1D Cross Sections > Geo-reference all Cross Sections. Ensure the newly-created nodes file is selected from the “Select GXY Nodes File” table (Note: The process in point 4 ensures that the shape file is the same format as an imported gxy file)

  7. Your file should now be geo-referenced. Not only will your river sections be placed correctly, but all section points within that cross section will be given a geo-referencing in the network (.dat) file (determined by distance from the centreline)

  8. Before carrying out any further edits on your 1D network it is recommended that you select Home > Networks > Save to ensure the newly applied coordinate data are stored in the underlying .dat file.

As with all operations, please remember to check the new positioning of the nodes. The nodes are not required to be in the exact location for linking to TUFLOW, therefore there is no guarantee that they’ll be in the right place to start with, however it should be a lot better.

Note: the above steps will only geo-reference those nodes listed in the shape file and will most probably not be 100% complete. However this should help in manually positioning the remaining nodes.
