Introduction to 1D urban modelling

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will understand the 1D urban modelling capabilities of Flood Modeller and when to apply the software to different types of application.

On completion, you will be able to build, run and review your own urban drainage model, consisting of manholes and pipes. You will also learn how to generate data in multiple formats.

You will also understand how to integrate the 1D urban solver with Flood Modeller’s 1D river solver to model channels, or its 2D solver to model surface water flow.

Key benefits

  • Delivered online or in person at venues throughout the UK and Ireland

  • Fast-track your learning and understanding of Flood Modeller

  • One-month Flood Modeller licence provided (worth £600)

  • Limited to 10 individuals, maximising the learning experience

  • Comprehensive notes, practicals, and other materials provided

  • Post-course support is provided for two weeks

Course pre-requisites

This course assumes no prior knowledge of flood modelling and is presented from a practical point of view by expert modellers.

It is recommended that attendees complete the ‘Getting started’ guides prior to the training to ensure the best possible learning experience.

Course structure

You will cover a range of topics through the training:

  • Introduction to 1D urban modelling

  • Building a 1D urban model (consisting of manhole, pipes, etc)

  • Running simulations

  • Adding flow regulation features (weirs, orifice, etc)

  • Analysing and post-processing results

  • Linking the 1D urban solver to Flood Modeller's 1D river and 2D solvers

Course leader

Blanca Garcia, Senior Modeller

Blanca has led and delivered an extensive variety of hydraulic modelling projects. Blanca has been providing technical support and training of graduate hydraulic modellers within Jacobs over the past 5 years.

Additional information

The in-person version of this course is delivered in one day. The course starts at 09:30 and finishes at 17:00.

The online version of this course is delivered across two-days. It consists of four sessions, with each session being delivered across a two-hour period. Two sessions are delivered each day with the first session in the morning followed by a second session in the afternoon.

Prior to the training, you will receive a detailed document which provides all the information you need to undertake the course, including the agenda, links to the various resources, and details on how to access Flood Modeller.

Each attendee must provide their own laptop to undertake the training. However, a one-month Flood Modeller Standard edition training licence (worth £600) is provided to each attendee.
