Setting Default Chart Properties

Posted 16/04/2018 12:38 by Cian.Buckley

When viewing 1D model charts, such as time series and section plots, the default axis font size is 8. Often this is too small when including the chart in a report and constantly changing the font size is quite time intersive.

Can the default text size be set by the user?

Unstructured mesh a la HEC-RAS 2D

Posted 25/09/2017 10:36 by MattHorritt

No replies yet

I've just been looking into HEC-RAS 2D, and how it represents storage within cells and conveyance  between cells using topography. It's theoretically possible to do this in flood modeller using reservoir and floodplain units, but you'd have to set up the mesh manually. Worth thinking about this as a possible development within flood modeller? The user could draw a series of touching polygons (with some nice functionality to allow topological editing), and flood modeller would automatically build the network of reservoir and floodplain units.

Saving selection

Posted 06/07/2017 15:54 by murtazasarwar

No replies yet

It will be useful to have a mechanism to save the unit selections in the FM project.

We need to very often draw long sections. If its a single reach then units are easy to select but in many cases there are parallel channel or units just sitting next to each other. Furthermore the lack of polygon selection makes it very time consuming to make a selection quickly in above situations. And if its a non-georeferenced model then you are in even more trouble.

Selecting units on map panel using freehand mouse drawn polygon

As FM becomes more GIS focused, the usability of the map panel needs to improve. One of the features that will be very useful is to draw around units with mouse for slecting them instead of the current 'rigid' way of rectangular (marquee) selection.

Deleting lateral inflow nodes from the initial conditions

There is a long standing bug in ISIS / Flood Modeller where, when a laleral inflow node is deleted it isn't automatically removed from the intial conditions, which then has to be done manually using a text editor.  Can this be fixed?

ReFH2 Boundary Unit - Urbanisation & Hydrograph Parameters

Posted 09/05/2017 13:11 by Natasha

Last post 18/05/2017 14:28

The urbanisation parameters used within the ReFH2 software (IRF, IF etc) should be available for use within a ReFH2 boundary unit. The generated report states values used for these parameters, however, due to the lack of available functionality, they are only ever set as default values.

The unavailability of these parameters means that it is not possible to recreate peak flow values formulated within ReFH2 in a ReFH2 boundary unit, unless a QT boundary with ReFH2 exports is used instead. This is less than ideal, and takes away one of the advantages of using ReFH2.

It should also be possible to alter hydrograph parameters (Cmax, BL, BR etc), as in ReFH1 boundary units, as they can be fitted to observed data in the ReFH2 calibration utility tool, providing a more robust hydrograph shape than relying on catchment descriptors alone.

Font tytpe

Posted 18/01/2017 10:28 by ParrattL

It appears that the font in FM Network Panel is different to that which appears on the map, e.g. an interpolates appears as 'In' in Netwok Panel and 'ln' on map.

I wonder if this is because different fonts are being used and if they can be exactly the same?

Leaky Dam unit

Posted 16/01/2017 22:57 by nsteele

Last post 17/01/2017 10:09

There is a lot of interest in trying to model NFM features. I recently constructed a leaky dam using a reservoir, weir and orifice. This is not easy in FMP 1D as naming the nodes and getting it all connected properly is a bit of a challenge. Furthermore, the nature of these NFM measures is that you have to do lots of them.

I wondered if there is scope to make a leaky dam "unit". Inside it would have the three components, but only one "unit" would need connecting into the river schematic. I would have thought this would be a relatively easy thing to code.

Using this kind of measure in a hydrological routing model would be really useful in tackling the scale of these NFM problems. Armed with a DTM and some ReFH units you could go a long way to a first approximation of the problem.

Elevate FM Free to Pro version during a session.

Posted 30/11/2016 15:14 by mjshallcross

No replies yet

It is possible to demote a FMP session from Pro to Free which we find useful when spreading licences across all our modellers.

It would be fantastic if you could also promote from Free to Pro (assuming licencing allows).

It isn't uncommon for someone here to start editting a large model without realising they're using Flood Modeller Free until they come to save the dat file. If you could promote to Pro so you can save any edits (even if they were made in the Free version) that would stop a lot of swearing in the office. yell

And we'd all like that.

Is it possible to add an arrowhead, to indicate the direction in which polylines in Flood Modeller have been drawn? This would be useful for application to Flood Modeller-TUFLOW model files, such as BC lines and PO lines?

Module to interact with binary results

Posted 24/11/2016 14:29 by mjshallcross

No replies yet

It was briefly mentioned at the conference - a module to read binary FMP results directly would be fantastic. With Python interface ideally laughing

Currently any tools we build to read FMP/ISIS results rely on first converting to csv text file using TabularCSV.exe in silent mode using a .tcs file. Directly reading from the binary results file would save a lot of faff.

Cheers,

Matthew

Cross section coordinate Extraction from left and right Ignore Deactivation XS

Posted 17/11/2016 16:44 by Z

No replies yet

Currently Flood Modeller allows to extract the Cross Section Coordinates from 1, River Bed 2, left and Right Banks 3, left and right extremeties. is this possible to add a option which can extract the coordinates and left and right and does not take in acccunt the deactivated coordinated? the elevation of extracted coordinates at the every end of left and right banks not including deactivated points will be used to compare with the max stage to check if there are any glass wall effect at any cross sections

Improvements to Model Health Check

Posted 04/11/2016 17:18 by Jon Lloyd

No replies yet

I find the Model Health Check feature in Flood Modeller a useful tool for quickly assessing the quality of 1D model builds and performing simple checks on panel markers, node spacing etc. However, I think the tool would be even more useful if it was better geared towards assisting the modeller in fixing these issues in a more direct manner.

For example, it would be great to see the cross sections that don't have set panel markers highlighted in the Map window to allow the user to quickly assess which sections need addressing rather than picking out the labels from the text output and then searching through the nodes list to find these units. This would be particularly helpful on larger models or where the reviewing modeller is less familiar with the node labels and wants to understand spatially where errors might be occuring.

I think a similar visualisation of these checks would be useful on a whole host of the in built tests / checks that the Model Health Check feature already provides. For example if you were able to highlight areas of erratic node spacing in the map window and compare this against known areas of poor convergence, this might help modellers pin point weak points within their models and make ammendments to try and fix these issues.

Thanks,

Jon

Option to send all forum posts to all registered users

Posted 02/11/2016 12:34 by Bob

Last post 02/11/2016 17:02

I have recently seen some requests for new ideas for which similar or alternative functions already exist in the current version of the software. Furthermore there have been reported software bugs for which workarounds may exist that the user was unaware of. In these cases (not to mention where particular model issues are solved) I think it could be useful for the wider Flood Modeller community to be made aware of the relevant workaround or potentially useful function or methodology.

Currently the forum system only generates email notifications for an initial post within a thread and notifications of subsequent posts will only be sent to the original poster, plus anyone else who has contributed to the thread. So unless you are checking the forum regularly you may miss a potentially helpful reply.

I propose two options for the forum:

 - Firstly an option (maybe on the initial email notification or at the top of the thread) to sign up to a thread so that you then get emails notifying you of any subsequent replies.

 - Secondly an option in your account settings to automatically receive notifications of all posts on all threads within the forums and ideas lab. Obviously not everyone would want this as it may significantly increase the number of Flood Modeller emails you receive (hence why it would only be an option), but it would guarantee you don't miss out on learning about a particular function.

Any feedback would be gratefully received as to whether either or both of these options would be useful.

Regards

Bob

River modelling centre line (and LOB - ROB lines)

Posted 01/11/2016 13:10 by chasward

Last post 02/11/2016 10:59

We currently have an issue specifying resurvey to be located exactly on the site of historic survey cross-sections: ok, a practicable definition of ‘exactly’. The distance between reach cross-sections is currently an inexact science due to the lack of a centre line. Whilst any uncertainty can be constrained by referencing chainage as relative between key structures, there is no absolute. For the reason of repeatability, it would be good to be able to record a polyline string for centre-line (this may be as step towards EACSD). It would also be useful to identify LOB and ROB over bank distances as polylines. This would be useful for unambiguous recording of current bank lengths and repeatability of measurement – robust data! It would also come in useful for instances such as bank washouts and engineered short-cutting. An ability to read  grid elevations into the LOB / ROB strings would be useful. This would enable a precise tie-up between the 1d and 2d domains - the overbank elevation data could be output for use as z-lines.

Add Geo-referencing for Structures

Posted 01/11/2016 12:29 by chasward

Last post 07/11/2016 11:04

Currently FMP does not have Easting Northing fields for structures. This means that FMP cannot site structures on a georeferenced background (map). Instead the .gxy only situates the model nodes that do contain East/Northings in their correct respective positions. The structures are remain left out of position in a conceptual model space. More than occasionally these are left 'stacked' at the model origin. For some applications (i.e. dense model structure) it might be convenient to have structures out of the way (but in FMP these it can be opted to show channel icons / non-channel icons). Of course it would sometimes be useful to see structures assume their correct positions. For units such as weirs, it should be possible to see the extent of these and for spills, ideally, read the underlying grid for elevation data. For your consideration. Thanks.

Pan function similar to Autocad

Posted 26/10/2016 14:15 by Matt Jeffes

Last post 02/11/2016 11:06

Hi,

I discussed with Konrad on a course but it would be good if the pan function in the GIS window could be linked to the mouse. In CAD if you hold the middle mouse button down and move the mouse it pans the image. A similar function in Flood Modeller would be great to improve navigation around a complex gis represented system.

It would be nice to allow enabling GPU assistance for CPU.

Use graphic card capabilities to reduce computation time.

NVIDIA and ATI professionnal graphic cards can reduce calculations time by 5-10.

I think it would be great if there was an undo button as a feature - undo buttons are standard practice with most software, think this would be a great thing to have to help with those accidental mistakes sometimes!

Improved display and filing structure for multidomain model output

Posted 22/01/2016 12:09 by fiona

No replies yet

For a multidomain 2d model FloodModeller will only pull in the results for 1 domain automatically.  Results for individual domains are written to separate folders, but the name of these is unrelated to the domain name in the .xml file.

Suggest the default option is to read in results from all domains when you import the results, and either to place multidomain output within a subfolder under the run name or to add the domain name to the output folder name.
