Introduction to 1D river modelling

Learning objectives

By the end of our CIWEM accredited training course, you will understand the 1D river modelling capabilities of Flood Modeller and when to apply the software to different types of application.

The course will allow you to familiarise yourself with the various tools and features within the software, allowing you to build your own 1D river model, run simulations, troubleshoot common modelling issues and interpret results.

Key benefits

  • Delivered online or in-person at venues throughout the UK and Ireland

  • Fast-track your learning and understanding of Flood Modeller

  • CIWEM accredited - attendance contributes toward your CPD.

  • One-month Flood Modeller licence provided (worth £600)

  • Limited to 10 individuals, maximising the learning experience

  • Comprehensive notes, practicals and other materials are provided

  • Post-course support is provided for two-weeks

Course pre-requisites

This course assumes no prior knowledge of flood modelling or Flood Modeller software.

It is recommended that attendees complete the ‘Getting started’ guides prior to the training to ensure the best possible learning experience.

Course structure

You will cover a range of topics through the training, including:

  • Introduction to 1D river modelling

  • Building a 1D river model

  • Running simulations

  • Adding 1D hydraulic structures

  • Sensitivity, calibration and diagnostics

  • Floodplain modelling in 1D

  • Floodplains, 2D and integrated modelling

Course tutor

Wiktor Lewkut, Flood Modeller

Wiktor has a background in civil engineering and has been part of Jacobs' modelling team for 4 years, successfully delivering a number of hydraulic and hydrological models. He has also been providing technical help and guidance regarding the usage of Flood Modeller.

Additional information

The in-person version of this course is delivered across two-days, starting at 09:30 and finishing at 17:00.

The online version is delivered across three-days. It consists of six sessions, with each session being delivered across a two-hour period. Two sessions are delivered each day with the first session in the morning followed by a second session in the afternoon.

Prior to the training, you will receive a detailed document which provides all the information you need to undertake the course, including details on how to access Flood Modeller.

Each attendee must provide their own laptop to undertake the training. However, a one-month Standard edition Flood Modeller training licence (worth £600) is provided to each attendee.

This course is approved by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and attendance will contribute toward your continuing professional development (CPD).
